Australian Guidelines for Sanitising Soft Surfaces During a Suspected Viral Outbreak

by

During a viral outbreak, Sanitising Soft Surfaces is essential to help reduce the spread of infection in homes and workplaces. In Australia, following proper cleaning and infection control guidelines ensures carpets, couches, upholstery, and other soft furnishings are treated safely and effectively. While hard surfaces are often prioritised, viruses can also settle into porous materials if they are not properly maintained.

By prioritising Sanitising Soft Surfaces using recommended methods such as steam cleaning, HEPA vacuuming, and proper laundering, property owners can significantly lower health risks during high-risk periods. Understanding these Australian guidelines helps create safer environments for families, staff, and customers alike.

1. Follow the Two-Step Approach: Clean First, Then Sanitise

Soft surfaces should first be cleaned to remove dirt and contaminants using a liquid detergent and warm water. This is an important step because organic matter (like dirt or bodily fluids) can reduce the effectiveness of sanitising agents.

After cleaning, sanitisation focuses on reducing infectious agents to safe levels. For hard surfaces, disinfectants approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) australia-wide are recommended. However, for soft materials, chemical disinfectants that work on non-porous surfaces may not be as effective,  and may even damage fabrics.

2. Steam Cleaning Is the Go-To Method for Soft Surfaces

The Communicable Diseases Network Australia (CDNA) and infection control documents in Australia recommend steam cleaning as an effective sanitising method for soft furnishings, carpets, rugs, and upholstered items. Steam penetrates deep into fabrics, helping to kill viral particles and bacteria without harsh chemicals that could harm the material.

Key benefits of steam sanitising:

  • Reaches deep into porous fabrics

  • Works without harsh chemicals that may damage textiles

  • Leaves surfaces dry and ready for immediate use

  • Helps sanitise high-touch soft areas like chairs and lounges

This method is widely used in healthcare settings, quarantine facilities, and commercial cleaning for infection control during outbreaks.

3. Vacuuming With HEPA Filters Before Sanitising

Before steam cleaning, vacuum soft surfaces like carpets and fabric chairs with a HEPA-filtered vacuum where possible. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters help capture fine particles and reduce redistribution of dust and allergens during cleaning.

4. Launder Removable Soft Items When Possible

Curtains, cushion covers, blankets, and other removable fabric items should be laundered when feasible, ideally on the hottest setting safe for the fabric, followed by thorough drying. This approach is particularly recommended for household items or facility linens where washing machines are available.

5. Frequently Touched Surfaces Still Matter

Don’t forget that both hard and soft surfaces that are frequently touched (e.g., armrests on chairs, soft toy surfaces, or fabric door push pads) should be part of regular cleaning schedules, often more than once daily during high-risk periods or active outbreaks.

6. Follow Safety Precautions and Manufacturer Instructions

Whether you’re steam cleaning, vacuuming, or laundering:

  • Always use personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves.

  • Follow manufacturer instructions for cleaning machines and detergents.

  • Never mix cleaning chemicals.

  • Ensure adequate ventilation during and after cleaning.

Soft surfaces can harbour germs, but with the right methods and consistent routines, you can reduce infection risks effectively during a suspected viral outbreak. Approaches like cleaning with detergent, steam sanitising, laundering where possible, and vacuuming with proper filters align with recognised Australian best practices, helping keep homes, workplaces, and communities safer.

For professional cleaning support that aligns with infection control best practices in Australia, trust Sipena Cleaning to deliver thorough, responsible sanitisation of both hard and soft surfaces.
